The Trans-Antarctic Association is managed in the United Kingdom by a Board of Trustees, who together form the Committee of Management. Two Advisory Committees have been established to consider funding applications, one in the UK and the other in New Zealand. Applications from the UK, Australia and South Africa are considered by the UK Advisory Committee, and those from New Zealand by the NZ Advisory Committee. The Advisory Committees consider applications in detail, and make recommendations to the Committee of Management, which makes the final decisions on award of funds. The Trustees are supported by the Company Secretary / Grants Secretary and an accountancy firm, while TAA investments are managed by the London investment partnership Sarasin. Trustees of the TAA and membership of the committees are listed below.
Long-standing member of the TAA Dr Peter Clarkson resigned his position as Chairman and as a Trustee in May 2017. The Trustees wish to note with thanks the work Peter carried out for the TAA over many years. The Committee of Management, the Advisory Committees, and indeed the grant recipients can all be very thankful for his tireless dedication and leadership. Dr John Shears stepped into his role as Chair, and was also appointed a Trustee in 2017. He runs his own polar consultancy company – Shears Polar Ltd. The Trustees and Committee of Management welcomed Dr Bryan Lintott as a Trustee in 2017. He is a New Zealander with a strong background in Antarctic research, currently employed as a research associate at the Scott Polar Research Institute. In 2019, Dr Vanessa Bowman, who has dual New Zealand/British citizenship, replaced Dr Colin Harris on the Committee of Management. Vanessa was a palynologist at the British Antarctic Survey and is now a senior administrator at Jesus College at the University of Cambridge. The other two Trustees are Professor Andrew Clarke and Dr Julian Paren, who were both scientists at the British Antarctic Survey and now retired. The TAA Grants Secretary is Dr James Smith, who is also a scientist at the British Antarctic Survey.
