The Trans-Antarctic Association provides financial grants up to a normal maximum of £1,500 in support of field work or travel to Antarctica, as well as equipment and other research activities directly related to Antarctica. The total amount of money available for distribution each year in any one year varies between £ 10,000 and £15,000 depending on how well the charity's investment portfolio has performed.  One third of the available funds are awarded to New Zealand nationals through the New Zealand Advisory Committee, with the remainder being awarded to nationals from Australia, South Africa and the UK.  Application must be received before the annual deadline (31st January) and are considered by the relevant advisory committees by the end of March.  The recommendations of the advisory committees are presented to the full committee of management of the TAA in April, prior to notification of the applicants and the release of funds to the successful.

How to apply: Applications should be made on a standard form which can be downloaded from the links at the bottom of this page. To facilitate the review process the Association would greatly appreciate an electronic copy of the application, as well as, a signed copy.  The application form has space for a brief curriculum vitae, a short description of the project, and the names of two referees. Note that the Association cannot support requests for salary funding, and does not normally provide subsistence or living expenses. A financial statement should show the full costs of the project and any other sources of income.  The sum requested of the Association must be clearly identified.
The TAA has a limited sum of money to dispense and attempts to help as many worthy applicants as possible.  Therefore applicants are requested to search for competitive airfares wherever possible, and provide copies of any flight quotes, or other high value items requested in the application.  The Association may revise the amount of any grant depending upon the merit of the application and the availability of funds.

The closing date for receipt of applications is 31 January each year. Late applications can only be considered in exceptional circumstances. Applicants are normally advised of the result by the following May, this should therefore be taken into account when applying for a grant. If you have a deadline or activity close to the normal notification date (i.e. May) please make this clear as it may be possible to inform you a little sooner.

The Association does not consider retrospective applications (An application to fund an activity that has already taken place or will have taken place before grant notification).
